Conclusion

English version I have just set up the Fedora 8 at work to test this new release.

I had some problem to install it so I try by different ways:

  • Upgrade via yum, based on some advice given on the forum Fedora-fr I tried to upgrade from Fedora 7 to Fedora 8 through yum. I met some dependancies problem that a yum remove tried to solve. However that has not been enough. I indeed met other "Security" problem later on the yum update.

I tried to reboot, I saw the new bootsplash and the new theme but I could start the F8 kernel neither finish the yum update on the F7 kernel.

  • Netinstall, I finally decided to try this solution, burning the boot.iso onto a CD and using it to install Fedora 8 downloaded directly the package through internet.

To do this I was glad that my internet connection was fast and stable enough. When you do such install, you can download more package from the Fedora repository increasing significantly the number of pacakages available for the installation. However due to connection limits, I do advice to do a light install at first and to use pirut or directly yum to improve the installation later on.

This try led me again to another bug. When I started the computer it seemed to fail to recognize the hard disk. so I went to a third solution:

  • Netinstall of Fedora 7 and direct upgrade via yum to Fedora 8.

This method worked properly except some details about packages not signed or somes files in conflict, but I could manage to discard these problems quite easily.

So I have now a clean Fedora 8 on which I have start but set up all the softwares that I need to work, and that I did not set up before due to the netinstall process.

Conclusion:

  • It is nice to have a test computer to play with :)
  • For the design I have to recognized that I really like it, it is sober but looks quit modern. It is very different from what we have been used to but still very good. I believe they made a great work !! I also like the fact that you can personnalize the colors of your menu, windows...
  • For GNOME there is some changes, but I would say that you stay in the line present on Fedora 7.
  • For KDE the last version of KDE (KDE4) is avalaible on the Fedora repository but not when you install it, ( you have to do the upgrade by yourself).

To conclude of this first impression, I believe this new release will be very nice, at least it is looking like a very good one.
