The new Muffin (French Fedora user magazine) is out !

Nouvelle version de Muffin

English

Muffin (French speaking User Fedora Magazine) has been released today. I would like to congratulate all the people involved for the very nice peace of work which has been done.

Having followed the development of this magazine I can say it has not always been easy, but it is at the end a very nice magazine!

It is also the realisation of Cédric Guilbaud which step up as a brand new ambassador to take over the leadership of this project. He has made a nice job and I am already looking forward to the number 3 ;-)

Anyway, no more words are needed, just check it out !

Automate some of the step needed for a review

English format

One month ago I was presenting a small script to automate to a certain point R review.

Since then, I have quickly been working on re-factoring the code to make it hopefully cleaner and more flexible.

The script works really simply, give it a src.rpm or a url and it will download the src.rpm, download the sources of the package, compare the sha1sum with upstream, install the srpm, build it locally and if the local build worked, start a scratch build on koji and run rpmlint on the generated rpm.

This is made for any package, but according to the name of the package more functionality can be added. I already added the function specific for R reviews, but I would like to know if person from PHP-Pear/Pcl or from Perl would also be interesting to add their own method in this script.

Again the goal is not to replace to reviewer but more to make his task easier also by automating some of the mandatory steps (such as the local build, the sha1sum of the srpm vs the upstream sources or running rpmling). It is not meant to replace a human reviewer but more to assist him.

The script is available at: http://pingou.fedorapeople.org/reviewHelper.py

Let me know if you find it interesting.

A script to help to review R packages

English version

There has been a bunch of new R review submitted to the redhat Bugzilla lately and I have been doing some.

R is easy to package (R2spec being of some help on that) and quite boring to review. The package needs to follow the guidelines but after that besides the license, potential warning at build time and the dependencies there isn't much to check.

So in order to make my life easier I have written a small script that automates a number of steps for me.

There is what it does from a srpm:

check for the latest version

download the src.rpm

install the src.rpm

download sources

sha1sum of the sources

sha1sum of the sources from src.rpm

check that R-core is in the Requires line

check that R-devel is in the BuildRequires line

check that tex(latex) is in the BuildRequires line

check that %dir */R/library/%{packname} is present

check that %doc concerns at least doc, html, DESCRIPTION, NEWS and print the other

check the %install

check that there is coherence between noarch and datadir

check that there is not both datadir and libdir in a spec

build locally the rpm and run rpmlint on them

start a build on koji for the src.rpm

This output looks like this:

$ python Scripts/R-autoreview.py -s R-caTools-1.10-2.fc12.src.rpm * Latest version packaged
Target is already in the folder, no need to re-download it

New release of R2spec

Nouvelle version de R2spec

English version

This time it is there, the new release of R2spec is on its way and I have to say it brings a huge bunch of new features!

R2spec now comes with a new flavour, R2rpm which allows you to generate directly rpm from the R libraries.

Since I already announced it I won't spend to much time on it.

Check the changelog at the bottom for all the info !

I would like to thanks José Matos and Allen S. Rout for their help to build and improve this release.

Version 3.0.0 -- 05th May 2019
- Features added
  * R2spec can now be called from an external script
  * Use template via jinja2 to generate the spec files (Based on an idea of Allen S. Rout)
  * Create the R2rpm script which directly builds the rpm
  * Add a man page for R2rpm
  * Add the -p option which enable to build a spec from a package name
  * Parse the PACKAGES file from the repositories to find the information for the packages
  * Make the print of the TODO optional in the API
  * Give the opportunity to use mock to build the RPMs (rpmbuild being the default)
  * Enable to specify the mock command in the conf file
  * Enable to change the argument given to rpmbuild via the conf file
      (to build srpm instead of rpm for example)
- Bugs correction
  * Fix the addition of the R- prefix to the dependencies
  * Rewrite the reading of the DESCRIPTION file from R
  * Do not enforce the spec and the source directory, reads the rpmmacros instead
     Thanks to José Matos for this function
  * Fix the summary if it ends with a dot "."
  * Capitalize the summary by default
  * Change UTF-8 to utf-8 to make emacs happy
  * Fix the spec file for the dependencies of this new release
  * Fix some bugs while trying to generate the RPM/SPEC from a tarball

How to configure your trackpoint to emulate mouse wheel on Fedora 13

English version

Some time ago I posted how to configure the trackpoint to emulate the mouse wheel on Fedora 11.

However, with the new release of Fedora, this configuration does not work anymore, as explained in the documentation.

So there is the new protocol to emulate the mouse wheel with the trackpoint:

Create a file
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/mouse.conf

Put this into it:

Section "InputClass"
  Identifier     "Wheel Emulation"
  MatchIsPointer "on"
  MatchProduct   "TrackPoint"
  Option         "EmulateWheelButton" "2"
  Option "EmulateWheel" "on"
EndSection

Restart X

And there you go ! The middle click + the trackpoint emulate a mouse wheel.

/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/mouse.conf

Y mettre:

Section "InputClass"
  Identifier     "Wheel Emulation"
  MatchIsPointer "on"
  MatchProduct   "TrackPoint"
  Option         "EmulateWheelButton" "2"
  Option "EmulateWheel" "on"
EndSection

A RPM repository for R packages is being built

English version

At the moment I wrote this lines there is a group of people who have joined their effort to create a RPM repository for R packages in a similar way than Dirk's work for APT.

On the technical point, the RPMs will be built using R2rpm which have some consequences regarding the RPM generation (there is no -devel sub-packages and rpmlint is not silent for example).

We are busy at the moment trying to get and set up the architecture since we would like to support 4 versions:

- CentOS/RHEL 5 i386 and x86_64
- The latest version of Fedora i686 and x86_64

For that we will need some "builders" most likely some VM.

In order to discuss the creation of this project we have set up a mailing list available at:
http://www.bioinformatics.org/mailman/listinfo/r-repo-dev

Feel free to join the list to get some more information about its development and to help us making the project reality.

- CentOS/RHEL 5 i386 and x86_64

Building cran RPM via R2rpm

Construire des RPMs du cran avec R2rpm

English format

Using the PACKAGES file from the CRAN I was able to generate a list of 670 packages that do not depend on anything else than R.

This morning I ran R2rpm on the first 100, it took around 3h and there are the results:

89 packages built
['ADGofTest', 'AMORE', 'AlgDesign', 'Animal', 'BGSIMD', 'BMN', 'BPHO', 'BayesValidate', 'Bhat', 'BiasedUrn', 'Biodem', 'Bolstad', 'Bolstad2', 'BootCL', 'CAVIAR', 'CCP', 'CDFt', 'CHsharp', 'CORElearn', 'CTT', 'ClinicalRobustPriors',
'ComPairWise', 'CompetingRiskFrailty', 'ConvCalendar', 'CreditMetrics', 'CvM2SL1Test', 'CvM2SL2Test', 'DEA', 'DEMEtics', 'DEoptim', 'DTDA', 'DTK', 'Davies', 'Defaults', 'DiversitySampler', 'EMJumpDiffusion', 'EbayesThresh',
'ElectroGraph', 'ExPD2D', 'FBN', 'FITSio', 'FKBL', 'FNN', 'Flury', 'GPArotation', 'GWRM', 'GeneF', 'GillespieSSA', 'HAPim', 'HI', 'HMM', 'HMR', 'ISOcodes', 'Imap', 'Iso', 'JADE', 'JudgeIt', 'Kendall', 'LDtests', 'LIStest', 'LearnBayes',
'LearnEDA', 'LogitNet', 'LowRankQP', 'MAMSE', 'MCE', 'MKLE', 'MLDA', 'MLEcens', 'MMG', 'MMIX', 'MPV', 'MSVAR', 'MTSKNN', 'ModelGood', 'Multiclasstesting', 'NMFN', 'NORMT3', 'OPE', 'ORIClust', 'ORMDR', 'Oarray', 'OrdMonReg',
'PBSddesolve', 'PLIS', 'POT', 'PSAgraphics', 'Peaks', 'PearsonICA']

11 packages failed
['BioStatR', 'BoSSA', 'BradleyTerry', 'BradleyTerry2', 'CPE', 'Cairo', 'FracSim', 'GDD', 'KFAS', 'MImix', 'OAIHarvester']

Damn this is good ! :-)

New version of R2spec in the pipes

Une nouvelle version de R2spec dans les tuyaux

English version

There is a new version of R2spec in the pipes, this version fixes some bugs and introduces some new features.
The main of these features is the presence of R2rpm now.

R2rpm generate the complete rpm directly from a url, the sources or simply the name of the package.
It builds the package twice, once to determine the %file section and once to generate the RPM.

I fixed the length of the %description so that it is not bigger than the mandatory 75 characters, the summary is also corrected if it ends with a dot.

Tonight I have been playing with this new version, I was able to generate in the fly a bit more than 70 RPMs for R libraries in just few minutes (ok maybe it tooks a couple of hours :-)).

All the RPMs work, there are not rpmlint compliant so there would need more work if we want to integrate them into the repository but it is a good basis.

Something that I still want to do before to release officially the version 3.0.0 is the possibility to build the dependencies of a given package. Basically, this would allow to build RPM for one package and all the packages of which it depends.

For those who would like to test you can find the source, srpm and rpm in
https://fedorahosted.org/releases/r/2/r2spec/
(latest release so far 3.0.0-0.4).

Do not hesitate to test it and report any issue you find in it :-)

Hope you like it !

Back on FOSDEM 2010

La fin du FOSDEM 2010

English version

There we are, on the way back home.
These 2 days have been really nice, this event is attracting every year more and more people and covers more and more topics.

Today I have been able to attend 2 very interesting conferences. One from Richard Hughes on PackageKit one year after. It is a very good tool and the future of it, looks really nice.
After that I stayed for the talk on 'Semantic Desktop' this being a technology that I have professionally interest in. The conferences covered a quick introduction to the basis of the semantic technology and format with a quick presentation of the RDF format, the second part was more applied to the implication of the semantic technology in the development of the 'Desktop Environment'. Unfortunately time was running I could not stay to this part.
I have to say that I would love to see more conference about this, but FOSDEM is probably not the best place for that. I should look for more semantic oriented conference.

Thanks to Max I am also carrying with me about 600 laptop stickers that the French NPO will be able to redistribute, thanks a lot Max !

Finally I would like to thanks all the people that made this FOSDEM such a good one, starting of course by the FOSDEM people and Frederic who organised the Fedora and JBoss participation this year again. Thanks to all the folks from Grece, Turkey, USA, The Netherlands (yes there were some, although not all were real Dutch), the German community present as ever, the French and Belgium guys who showed up but also our ambassadors from Switzerland, Hungary, Roumania, Italy (I am probably missing some, sorry about that).

I was nice to see all and I am already looking forward to see you next year.

PS: Nicu if you read this, since I could not pay you a beer today, let me know how to be sure you get one. I want the Fedora Comic back !! ;-)

Just arrived at FOSDEM

FOSDEM 2010, les premières impressions (anglais uniquement)

English version

I have just arrived at the forum and it feels already nice. Nice blue sky, good people around and while the FOSDEM is opened
for one hour that there are already quite some people.

The Fedora Booth is located to a new place but quite close to were it was last year. We are still on one of the biggest part
of the even, quite right in the middle. We have space around and for neighbour CentOS and Amarok, but few stands away, the GN
OMe booth also has a Fedora for demonstration.

Now time to look at the planning of the conference to see which one I want to attend. I already checked mine, 17h30 in the Di
stribution room.

Here we go !

On the road to FOSDEM 2010

Sur la route du FOSDEM 2010

English version

FOSDEM, for the third year in a row I am going to FOSDEM. I am looking forward to it, this year again it will be great I am sure ! I'd like to thanks Federic for all the work it did on organising this amazing event.

I have not looked deeply into the program yet all I know is that I will be giving the talk about the french speaking community and its NPO on saturday afternoon.
I will also likely be hanging here and there, looking for people and likely give a hand to the booth. I already know that I need to find the debian maintainer of Guake ;-)

But first things first, first let's arrive to Brussels (I'm still in the train to) then find the hostel and this afternoon I'll be joinning the Fedora FAD.

To all of you who are going to the FOSDEM, see you later !

It's gonna be great ! I'm looking forward :)

The builds can be found:

https://admin.fedoraproject.org/updates/guake-0.4.1-2.fc12

Guake 0.4.1 is released !

La version 0.4.1 de Guake est sortie !

English version

Guake 0.4.1 has been released, has been built and is pending for the testing repository. For reference, Guake is a top-down terminal in the same style than Tilda, Yakuake or the consol in the game quake. It is made for Gnome

Among the new feature we have quite a number of new locales available, the switch to Transifex really helped us on that ! A certain amount of bugs are also fixed in this release.

The new release is called: "I was just joking" (you'll have to go through the archive of the mailing-list to get that one ;-)).

I hope you will enjoy this new version

If you test it, don't forget to comment on bodhi ;-)

Guake has now a mailing list !

Guake a maintenant une liste de diffusion

English version

Guake is a top-down terminal for Gnome in the same style than Yakuake or the terminal in quake.

I have been following this project for a while and I am now very pleased to announce you we have now a mailing-list for guake.

If you like the project, want to keep in touch, discuss on the priorities, the new features basically keep in touch with the project and its decisions feel free to sign in http://lists.guake.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/guake

If you are a beginner, want to report a bug and don't really know how to ask your question or how to formulate your words before opening a ticket on the trac, feel free to sign in the mailing-list!!

Another nice step forward for Guake

Always nice to meet people you know from Fedora

Une rencontre sympatique

English version

It is always nice to meet on the street people you know from Fedora. I have had this occasion today by meeting in the subway a fellow contributor.

Guake is now on Transifex

Guake est maintenant dans Transifex

English version

On Fedora working with upstream has always been a goal. I became packager for Fedora few years ago since then I try to follow this policy.

In one of the package I maintain it has become a bit more than with the other.

Guake is a top-down terminal (like Yakuake for kde or the terminal in Quake). I am using it on a daily basis (so nice to have your weechat over there) and about one and half year ago I submitted my first patch to the project.

Since then I never stopped to bother Lincoln about Guake :-)

Recently (and with the approach of a new release) I spoke to Lincoln about Transifex, I have to recognize that until now the translation were not that well handled by us (people had to open a ticket on the trac). Now with this tool we can see and follow much more easily the state of the translation.

And it works ! We have Guake in transifex for some days and we just finished to set up the commit on the po file on the git that we already have our first contribution, the update of the polish translation (thanks Piotr ) !

So if you are using Guake, likes it, feel free to check the project page on transifex and to add or update new translation (you might like to know that we should be in string freeze tomorrow for the release 0.4.1 ;-) ).

Thanks Transifex !

Merci Transifex !

Filter for the Fedora/Redhat mailing list

English version

Lately I have been trying to get around procmail to filter emails retrieved by fetchmail. I could not find on the internet example of procmail filter for the Fedora and RedHat mailing list.

The idea is to get a different maildir for each mailing list which I finally made up using this:

:0H:
* ^TO_.*<\/.*redhat\.com>
* MATCH ?? ()\/^@<+
$MAILDIR/$MATCH/

:0H:
* ^TO_.*<\/.*fedoraproject\.org>
* MATCH ?? ()\/^@<+
$MAILDIR/$MATCH/

I know, I could also have done 1 filter/mailing list but then again I'm lazy ;-)

:0H:
* ^TO_.*<\/.*redhat\.com>
* MATCH ?? ()\/^@<+
$MAILDIR/$MATCH/

:0H:
* ^TO_.*<\/.*fedoraproject\.org>
* MATCH ?? ()\/^@<+
$MAILDIR/$MATCH/

The guake project has moved

Le projet guake a déménagé

English version (French below)

Guake, if you do not know it, is a small top-down terminal for Gnome (in the style of Yakuake for KDE, Tilda or the terminal used in Quake).
The project was hosted until now at http://guake-terminal which became http://trac.guake-terminal when the trac instance became the main website.

In fact the main issue was that one of the developer for some reasons has stopped to get involved in the project and of course has shit never occur alone, he was the one owning the domain name. After poking him a bit the change from guake-terminal to trac.guake-terminal could be done though.

However, has all good project, having mailing list is nice, at least to keep in touch with the person involved (such as translators &all). But when you don't have access to the DNS the configuration becomes a problem.

Therefore, Lincoln (the main developer) bought yesterday the domain name http://guake.org where the project is now hosted.
So, if you know a bit the project, want to get involved, pay attention in the coming days we will have our mailing list set up !

Welcome home guake ;-)

Configure a trackpoint to emulate a mouse wheel

/etc/hal/fdi/policy/11-mousewheel.fdi

Dedans mettre:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<deviceinfo version="0.2">
<device>
  <match key="info.product" string="TPPS/2 IBM TrackPoint">
   <merge key="input.x11_options.EmulateWheel" type="string">true</merge>
   <merge key="input.x11_options.EmulateWheelButton" type="string">2</merge>
   <merge key="input.x11_options.YAxisMapping" type="string">4 5</merge>
   <merge key="input.x11_options.XAxisMapping" type="string">6 7</merge>
   <merge key="input.x11_options.EmulateWheelTimeout" type="string">200</merge>
  </match>
</device>
</deviceinfo>

Faire

service haldaemon restart

English version

This post is as much a reminder for myself as a wish to share what SmootherFr0gZ told me.

On my thinkpad there are no way to scroll up and down or on the side because I have a trackpoint and not a touchpad. But hal is there !!

Through hal you can emulate the third button to make it act as a mouse wheel.

The principle is easy:

Create the file /etc/hal/fdi/policy/11-mousewheel.fdi

Put this for content

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<deviceinfo version="0.2">
<device>
  <match key="info.product" string="TPPS/2 IBM TrackPoint">
   <merge key="input.x11_options.EmulateWheel" type="string">true</merge>
   <merge key="input.x11_options.EmulateWheelButton" type="string">2</merge>
   <merge key="input.x11_options.YAxisMapping" type="string">4 5</merge>
   <merge key="input.x11_options.XAxisMapping" type="string">6 7</merge>
   <merge key="input.x11_options.EmulateWheelTimeout" type="string">200</merge>
  </match>
</device>
</deviceinfo>

Restart hal

service haldaemon restart

Restart X

Now I can just press the middle button and move my mouse to scroll up and down or on the side :-)

I find this really handy !
